Zanick – Kickboxing

We recently took a trip to South Africa and had the chance to work with Zanick Essop. As far as shoots go, this was as spontaneous as it gets. I was doing corporate headshots when I met Zanick. It turned out that he was the South African kickboxing champ and had come 2nd at the 2011 World Championship. As I had my camera gear with me, I suggested that we do a shoot. He agreed, took a lunch break, picked up his brother who also represents South Africa and went to a nearby field. The midday light is a challenge to work in South Africa, but all things considered, I had a great time with Zanick and I’m happy with the way the pictures turned out.

Sarah Smith Yoga

We recently braved the cold England weather to do a yoga/fitness shoot in Bath with Sarah Smith.

About the Team

Model: Sarah was fantastic to work with. Besides looking the part and being willing to be out in cold, windy conditions that hovered around the 4 degree model, she helped out with location scouting and even more importantly, she knew the technical moves involved with yoga. As much as I enjoy photographing yoga, if the pose looks bendy and like something I can’t do, I consider it yoga. Sarah checked each image and re-adjusted her pose to make sure it was technically correct. Sarah can be hired here.

Lighting: Part of creating the mood of these images meant using lighting to creating artificial sunlight. Tina was great with this, running around in a wet forest with light stands and umbrellas.

Retouch: Amy Von Willigh is a professional retoucher based in Cape Town, South Africa. After working with Elle Decor magazine, she moved to photo retouching as her profession. Should you ever need a retoucher, her rates are very reasonable and she has a quick turn around time.

Adel Fitness Shoot

We did a fitness shoot in Port Elisabeth, South Africa with local model, Adel Vrey. We drew inspiration for the shoot from an old Hyundai, “Pretty but tough” campaign. It helps working with a model who does both yoga and mma.

Winter Run

A few months ago I posted a series of pictures of Carl exercising in a misty park. On that day, I saw the mist, contacted Carl and said, “you’re up for a shoot?”.

On the night before this shoot we experienced a snow storm. During the storm, I got a message from Carl, “I’m going for a jog tomorrow morning. Are you up for a shoot?”

He gave me a great lesson for staying fit – it doesn’t take a grand gesture or a massive effort. It takes consistency.

Actress Headshots

It’s been while since I’ve shared any work as I’ve been processing work for our travel portfolio. We took these images in September last year for Margot de Klerk, an actress based in London. As these headshots were for call sheets, they’ve had minimal retouch done to them. Her eyes are really that blue.
